NEC Upset

On the first night of the season, the NEC scored its first big upset of the 2013-2014 campaign thanks to the St. Francis Brooklyn  Terriers.

The Brooklyn natives went into South Beach and defeated the defending ACC Champion Miami Hurricanes.

Sure, this isn't near the same Miami team that ran through the ACC winning the ACC regular season (15-3) and the ACC tournament, grabbing a 2 seed in the NCAA tournament. After all the Canes lost Kenny Kadji, Durand Scott, Trey McKinney Jones, Julian Gamble, Reggie Johnson and star guard Shane Larkin.

But that doesn't matter. They're still the defending ACC champs, they still are lightyears ahead of St. Francis in terms of budget, facilities, conference prestige, etc.

Wayne Martin (a freshman) scored 17 points, Jalen Cannon finished with 14 and Ben Mockford added 11 for the Terriers (1-0). The astonishing fact is the Terriers won despite missing their first 13 shots of the game.
SF Brooklyn picked up the NEC's
first big win (SF athletics).

Miami hit a layup with two seconds left in regulation to send the game to OT. At that point all momentum was on the Canes side, and it looked like the Terriers would go home empty handed despite their efforts.

Jalen Cannon had other ideas. The first team NEC forward was a perfect example of just how far NEC talent has come over the years. He took over the game in OT when his team needed him most, including a beautiful move on the post with two minutes left in OT to give the Terriers the lead for good.

This win will only help the NEC moving forward, both in the RPI and in the perception of the conference. Last season Bryant took down Boston College, RMU defeated Kentucky in the NIT, and a few years ago Wagner grabbed the leagues first win over Pitt at the Peterson Events Center.

The league is making strides, and wins like this are hard core proof of that.

Congrats to the Terriers, and best of luck to the rest of the conference in the nonconference. Let's get that RPI up!
