CTC Valentines Day special

Happy Valentines Day everyone! This is a holiday of love, and if you haven't noticed, we love RMU basketball. So much, in fact, that here is a list of the things we love most. Enjoy:

-Karvel Anderson, in all his basketball glory. Talk about a shooter. No one even blinks when he drops 25+ anymore. We love his Kobe mentality, pull-up elbow jumper, and the ridiculous amounts of attention defenses give him. Oh, and those new Kobe's are something.

-Lucky Jones and his rebounding prowess. Luck might only (I use that word kindly) be 6'6", but not a lot of people scrap more than he does. On top of that, he wears awesome socks. Luck is a fan favorite, and a great guy on and off the court (like the rest of the team, I don't know many people around campus who don't love these guys).

-Charles Oliver and the ridiculous personal scoring runs he can go on. When Chuck plays with confidence, he's tough to handle. He has a great balance of three point attempts and driving to the hoop.

-The hustle guys: Aaron Tate and David Appolon. The energy that App brings each game is awesome. He's an animal on that wing in the 2-3 zone. While I've been critical of Aaron at times throughout the season, here is a guy who has truly developed into a helluva role player. His toughness playing the five and the rebounding he gives RMU is something to love.

-Hawk not giving up: This guy was buried on the depth chart a month or two ago. He could have transferred at the end of the first semester and nobody would have really blinked an eye. Then all hell broke loose and Hawk was thrust into the starting role. How has he done? Amazing. As the only guy taller then 6'6" on the team, he has been relied upon, and delivers more times then not. He kept working and improving, and when he got his chance, he took full advantage. Now he's one of the better bigs in the NEC as just a sophomore.

-How about some love for the point guards? Anthony Myers-Pate has had an incredible four years at Robert Morris. There are some really, really good point guards in the NEC this year, but I'll stand by my pre-season prediction of Ant finishing third team All-NEC. As for Kavon... how can you not love a kid who plays wiser than what he is? He's still learning, but his savviness on the defensive end is fun to watch. My favorite thing about Kavon? How he knows when to push the ball and draw a foul, which usually comes after a big play from the other team to halt momentum.

-I would never leave coach Andy Toole off this list. Coach, don't worry about what a few people think, the ladies here at RMU still drool over you. Really, though, how spoiled are we? His baseline inbounds call against Kentucky is legendary. The switch to a 2-3 base defense? Flawless. He's equal parts insightful, knowledgeable, and intimidating.

-This groups heart. From the coaches, to the mangers, and of course the players, what a response in the face of adversity. Six guys, including both starting forwards left the team/were suspended. The roster has only EIGHT bodies. Since then this group of eight is 6-1. Great job guys.

-I'm not sure everyone at RMU understands the really great coverage that this basketball program receives. The likes of Andrew Chiappazzi, Craig Meyer, Stephen Gertz, Paul Meyer, and us here at CTC (we'd like to think, at least) bring a lot of different perspectives and cover all sorts of angles. You can search for mid-major programs up and down the country but will be hard pressed to find great coverage like this.

-The Chuck. We love the Chuck. Don't listen to what people say about you Charles, you're our home and don't ever change.

-Finally, we love you guys. The crazies. The readers. Thank you for giving us a readership. We love the enthusiasm you bring for all the games... The "YES!" chant, the Sea of Red, the way you duke it out over free t-shirts during Hey Baby, and everything else. Hell, the president of the university likes you so much he chooses to sit right in front of you. Don't forget to always #PackTheChuck.

Enter the Morgue: RMU vs the Mount

Robert Morris (15-11, 10-1) vs Mount St Mary's (10-13, 6-4)
When: Saturday February 15th, 4pm
Where: Charles L. Sewall Center, Moon Twp PA
KenPom: RMU 145, Mount 228
Link: NEC Front Row
Storyline: The Colonials look to push their current win streak to four games, as the Mount comes to town looking for a big win to separate them from the middle of the NEC. The last time the Mountaineers came to the Chuck, they stunned the Colonials, knocking them out of the NEC tournament.

No Excuses:

I'm looking at you Colonial Crazies. This is a HUGE game. Sure, a win helps RMU get that much closer to securing the NEC regular season title, but this game has way more meaning. This team came to the Chuck last year, and ended the Colonials season. Not to mention Mount still remains one of the Colonials biggest rivals.
Bring your A game Crazies.

Then there was the whole "morgue" comment by the Mount radio broadcast from their fist meeting a few weeks ago. For those that don't know, the Mount color guy said the Colonials played with a lot of energy because there was a good crowd that day. He went on to say that RMU plays with a lot more energy because there is NEVER any energy in Moon, and that the Chuck is a "morgue."

Bring it Crazies.

Getting to Know the Mount:

Not too much has changed for the Mount since the last meeting. That's saying a lot, given all the roster movement and suspensions in the NEC.

The team lost a heartbreaker up at Bryant last Saturday. They fought back late, but didn't have enough in the tank to hold on and beat the Bulldogs. That loss halted a three game winning streak. Their last game, a re-match against Bryant, was postponed because of the storm that hit the Northeast. They currently sit at 6-4, tied for third in the league with Wagner and St Francis. They could realistically finish as high as second, or as low as even seventh.

Julian Norfleet remains their top weapon. He's averaging just over 18 points-per-game and will once again be the focal point for the Colonials. In the first matchup, the Colonials did a great job holding Norfleet to 11 points on 4-11 shooting.

Rashad Whack is averaging 17 points-per-game, and dropped 22 on the Colonials a few weeks ago. He's a VERY streaky shooter, so it's important that RMU pressure him early and get him out of rhythm.

Mount loves to get out and run and will use that patented full court press to speed up the game. There is a pretty simple formula to keep the game at a slower pace.

Get stops.

Mount can only set up that press after made baskets, so getting stops will limit their ability to pressure and make the game chaotic. The more organized the game is, the better for RMU.

Loaded Luck:

The junior swingman has come on strong the past two games, especially in the first half. Teams have come out with the mindset "we're not going to allow Karvel Anderson to beat us." Lucky Jones has taken full advantage. He scored 18 points in the first half against St Francis Brooklyn, and once again came out strong against the Red Flash, scoring the teams first six points.

I expect another strong start for Lucky. It looks like that jump shot is starting to come back to him, and that's a scary thought. He has still played well this year, and that's while struggling to shoot a bit. It was always going to be tough matching his performance last season, where he shot over 50 percent from three in NEC play, but he can still improve a bit.

Myers Pate has the Colonials clicking
on all cylinders.
Lucky brings so much to the table, especially since being asked to essentially play the power forward position since the suspension of Jeremiah Worthem, but as the NEC tournament approaches, I expect Luck to elevate his game just a bit more.

Speaking of Worthem:

In the star freshman's last game in a Colonial uniform before his year long suspension, he had by far his best game. He scored 21 points on 7-11 shooting and made all six of his attempts from the charity stripe against against Mount St Mary's.

The Mount will be very happy not to see the star Freshman in the rematch, but it's not all good news for the visitors. Their defense is still giving up a poultry 108.6 points-per-100 possessions. RMU's offense is still scoring at a very efficient rate, dropping 114.7 points-per-100 possessions in conference play. That's the second best rate in the NEC.

Expect Ant Myers-Pate, who's playing some GREAT basketball and Kavon Stewart, who's coming on very strong, to get guys like Anderson, Jones, and Chuck Oliver lot's of open shots.

Recap: RMU survives at St. Francis

Robert Morris defeated St. Francis (PA) by a score of 66-60. The Colonials improved to 10-1 in conference (15-11 overall) and have extended their win streak against St. Francis to 13.

It was a dogfight the whole way. The Red Flash, winners of four of their last five going into this game, hit some early three balls and found themselves down seven only briefly in the first half. RMU led 33-29 at half.
It was that type of night for Kavel.
(NBC)

RMU played well to start the second half but could not make a free throw. At all.

While the Colonials ultimately put away St. Francis due to their free throw shooting in the last few minutes, it was a large reason why this game was as close as it was. A 12-4 run by the Red Flash knotted the game up at 51 with 4:50 remaining.

From there, RMU got tough. They got to the rim, drew fouls, and hit 11 of their last 12 free throws. Also, Karvel Anderson happened. He hit two key jumpers, including a filthy baseline fadeaway that you couldn't help but laugh at.

Analysis
-Karvel Anderson: 28 points (11-17, 2-4), four rebounds, four steals, and two assists. I can understand Alex Francis getting votes for NEC player of the year, but there is not a chance he should win it over Karvel. I don't want to say 28 points is expected or I don't appreciate his scoring, but he makes it looks so easy. Without Karvel, RMU losses this one easy.

-I wasn't all too impressed with how the defense played. I've got to give credit to St. Francis, who had 14 assists on 25 made field goals (compared to RMU's six on 23) and did a phenomenal job getting easy looks. Unfortunately from them, they didn't hit the three ball at the mark they needed to to win.

-Lucky Jones hit his first two shots (both three pointers) but missed his remaining two field goal attempts. He did go 6-8 from the line and finished with 12 points and nine boards, but I'd like to see Lucky do a little more damage with his jump shot.

-Not a whole lot more to write home about. I must admit this: St. Francis is annoying. They hit some really deep three's, always make the extra pass, and never go away. They had a really nice turnout from their student section despite the snowstorm that hit them. Also, their broadcasters were awful. All and all, good for the Colonials for winning a road conference game, which is never easy.

I'll let Lee take it from here.

--@C_Cappella

Awesome win. Karvel did his thing....again. He is so damn good. 28 points on 11-17 shooting and it feels "just another day at the office."

That's 13 (!!!!) Straight wins for RMU over their Western PA rivals, but the last two have had to be EARNED. They move the ball really well, and make it difficult on the RMU zone. They also have a a ton of good shooters, and Earl Brown is a beast inside. He gives the Colonials fits. I think he had at least five dunks tonight. With all that said, I would like to avoid these guys in the NEC tournament. If we have an off night, they seem like the team that can pull an upset.

Kavon Stewart produced a few easy buckets with his blazing speed. He's going to be so good once he develops a jumper and gets some experience.

Lucky Jones once again did it all. 12 points, nine boards, good defense, and some clutch free throws after a rocky start from the line. Luck is a complete player, and is getting stronger as the season wears on.

Hawk provided some great rim protection and did a solid job in the second half. He stayed out of foul trouble, and that is important moving forward. David Appolon also played really well. He brings so much energy to the table. His hustle And-1 in the second half was huge. It was all will. He's also a perfect fit for the wing in that 2-3 zone. He can cover so much ground and his athleticism is really shown off on that wing.

All-in-all, great win on the road. 10-1 is damn good. The Colonials just need a few more wins to get that one seed. Huge game vs Mount at the Chuck Saturday. Preview up tomorrow, #PackTheChuck.

Robert Morris vs St Francis (PA), Western PA Brawl

Robert Morris (14-11, 9-1) at St. Francis (PA) (7-16, 5-5)
When: Thursday February 13th, 7pm
Where: DeGol Arena, Loretto PA
KenPom: RMU 143, St Francis PA 310
Link: NEC Front Row
Storyline: The Colonials look to continue their dominance over their Western PA rival and go a perfect 3-0 on the current road trip. The Red Flash could use a win for NEC playoff positioning as the NEC tournament approaches.

Getting to know the Red Flash:

The Red Flash may be just 7-16 overall, but they're a hot basketball team at the moment. Winners of four of five, the Red Flash are coming off a very good performance in Brooklyn, where they defeated the LIU Blackbirds 74-58.

This is still a team with a lot of talent, but not much size, and not one senior who plays a major role. Earl Brown, an undersized forward at 6-5, will once again be a handful for the Colonials. In the first matchup, Brown finished with 11 points and seven boards, but gave the Colonials a lot of problems at the high post.

In that game, Brown got the Colonial bigs in a lot of foul trouble. Let's not forget RMU's zone wasn't nearly as good as it is now back on January 16th. We also have to remember that Andy Toole and the Colonials had the services of Mike McFadden and Jeremiah Worthem in that game. They combined for 20 points and nine rebounds in that contest.

Millaud-Meunier is a guy that can
shoot the Colonials out of their zone D.
The Flash still have a bunch of guards who can really shoot it from three. Ben Millaud-Meunier went for 17 in that first game, including 5-8 from three. The Red Flash as a team made 11 three's in that game. It helped them erase a 14 point deficit, and gain an 11 point lead with four minutes to go. RMU had enough firepower to make a comeback, but that second half run will give St Francis confidence heading into the second matchup.

Guards Malik Harmon and Stephon Whyatt join Millaud-Meunier in the backcourt. They need to have strong games if St Francis wants to have a shot at upsetting the first place Colonials.

Continue Dominance:

RMU got a major scare from the Red Flash last time around at the Sewall Center. The Colonials really struggled defensively in the middle of the second half, and St Francis made some deep three's. The Red Flash turned a 14 point deficit into an 11 point lead in the blink-of-an-eye.

But Robert Morris came back, and got the win. Something the Colonials are accustomed to doing against their Western PA "rivals." With that win, RMU has won 12 straight over the Red Flash, and will look to push that number to 13 Thursday night.

Feed the Beast:

Last season in DeGol Arena, Karvel Anderson scored 18 straight points against the Red Flash. It was one of the better scoring displays I have ever seen. Anderson finished with 22 points that game. In the other meeting last season, he went for 17. In this years meeting at the Sewall Center, he went for 24.

Get the trend? Karvel should shoot, and shoot a lot. He does that well against these guys (and everyone else for that matter). The senior is right there in the Player of the Year conversation with Alex Francis. It's a two horse race with everyone else in the league far behind. Anderson probably has a small leg up at this point, but needs to continue to have big games. He also needs to continue to have big games for
Anderson has experienced nothing
but success against SFPA.
(NEC OT)
RMU to get victories, and that's the most important thing with March approaching.

Adjustment Period:

Since that wild week in which RMU lost six guys and the roster was trimmed to eight guys, the Colonials have been very good. That's been documented plenty, but this game will be intriguing. As mentioned above, the Colonials got a nice game from both Worthem and McFadden against the undersized Red Flash. The freshman a Worthem hit the biggest shot of the game, drilling a three on the wing to give RMU the lead back, as RMU made a big late comeback.

Seal the Deal:

If you didn't have a chance, check out Chris' article here on RMU's strong hold on first place as the NEC approaches. The Colonials need to get to 12 wins to have a good shot at winning the league. That requires a minimum of 3-3 the final six games.

With a difficult stretch of games at FDU and at Wagner to end the season, it would behoove the team to win three of the next four (with three straight at home after this game on the road) and wrap this thing up before that final road trip. A win here would be a great start.

Clinching up the NEC?

With only six games remaining in conference play, the buzz has begun about Robert Morris "running away" with the NEC regular season title. If you caught Lee's NEC recap yesterday, you would know Bryant had another strong weekend to keep pace with the Colonials.

So what's it going to take to win the NEC and clinch homecourt throughout the tournament? With six games remaining, Robert Morris is one up in the loss column to Bryant and three up on everybody else. On top of that, RMU has beaten Bryant both times the teams have squared off, effectively making it a two game lead.

I've said all along 12 wins should win this conference. I do not believe I'm alone in that sentiment either, referencing this tweet from Nelson Castillo of Blackbird Journal...

So, yeah. he might not have given an exact win total, but the point remains. To get to 12 wins, RMU has to finish the season just 3-3. Their last six games are against St. Francis (PA), Mount St. Mary's, Wagner, FDU, Long Island, or St. Francis (Brooklyn). I don't see three losses there barring injury.

Besides that, Bryant would have to finish the year at 5-1 to give them 13 wins. 12 wins won't do it because they will not win a tiebreaker against Robert Morris. Bryant's next six games are against Mount St. Mary's, Wagner, FDU, CCSU, St. Francis (Brooklyn), and LIU.

So what am I saying? It'll take a pretty serious train wreck to not win the NEC regular season title. For what it's worth, I think RMU goes 13-3 and Bryant goes 12-4.

NEC at a Glance

--Lee Kunkel
--@Kunkel5

--

Another great weekend in the NEC has passed, and once again it was the Robert Morris University Colonials making the biggest statement.

The Colonials swept the Brooklyn trip for the first time since the 99-00 season, picking up huge wins over Long Island and St Francis Brooklyn and in the process, moved their record to an NEC best 9-1.

As for the rest of the league? Well there are a lot of battles going on within the league, including the battle for the last spot or two for the NEC tournament, and also positioning within the league as March approaches.

Here are the current standings:

Lets start at the bottom of the NEC, where there was some pretty big news this past Saturday.

Getting Vinales back is big for
Central Connecticut (SB Nation).
Central Connecticut, a team many thought could contend for a top four spot (including CTC's own Chris Cappella), got some very good news. Not only did they defeat Fairleigh Dickinson in overtime, but they got their star guard, Kyle Vinales, back from a broken finger. One would think that CCSU, who is currently 3-7, alone in 8th place (the final NEC tournament spot), will have enough in the tank now to outlast Sacred Heart (1-9) and LIU Brooklyn (2-8).

Speaking of the Pioneers and Blackbirds, they both had a tough weekend going 0-2 each. Both have an uphill battle to even make the NEC playoffs. It would be pretty amazing if LIU, the three time defending champs, missed the tournament entirely, but that appears to be the reality with just six games left.

Back to Central Connecticut.

The Blue Devils, as mentioned above, picked up a huge win over FDU, pulling them into eighth place, and they now stand only one game behind the Knights for seventh place. Central has already picked up wins at Wagner, and at Robert Morris so there is little doubt that with Vinales back, the Blue Devils have the potential to cause some trouble for someone in the opening round of the NEC tournament. It will be interesting to see where they end up.

For now, the Knights of FDU are still in good position to make the NEC tournament at 4-6 but they could really use a win. They have lost four straight, all on the road, and still have a tough schedule with Wagner, Bryant, RMU, and SFNY all remaining. The good news is four of their six are at home, including a game against 1-9 Sacred Heart. One more win this year probably gets them into the NEC tournament.

As we move up in the standings, it's all about positioning and the battle for home court. The Red Flash of St Francis (PA) have won four of five, and can really make a statement Thursday be beating the conference leaders (RMU) on their home court. They split the Brooklyn trip, losing to the Terriers Thursday, and beating LIU on Saturday. At 5-5 they are in sixth place, but are only one game out of third.

Then comes the fun. There are three teams, Wagner, Mount St Mary's, and St Francis Brooklyn, all at 6-4. Wagner had the best weekend, going 2-0 with wins over FDU and Sacred Heart. Mount and St Francis split their pair of games.

Rivers and Wagner should finish strong
with five of six at home (ESPN).
The Seahawks also have a huge advantage moving forward. They play at FDU this Thursday, and then they won't play a road game the rest of the regular season. Their final five games of the regular season are at home including games vs Mount, RMU, and Bryant.

If the Seahawks end the season going 5-1 or even 6-0, both very possible, they could catapult themselves from the middle of the pack up into the top two.

As for the other two in that cluster, Mount and St Francis, both had difficult endings to their past weekend. Mount lost a heartbreaker at Bryant, 78-75 after a questionable shot by star guard Julian Norfleet with the team down two in the final seconds. However, they will get another shot at the Bulldogs on Thursday, this time on their home court.

Then there is St Francis. The Terriers had a terrible weekend. They beat St Francis (PA) Thursday night, and it all went downhill from there. Three key players, Wayne MartinBrent Jones, and P.J. Santavenere, were all suspended just before Saturday's game against RMU. Then the Terriers got blitzed by the Colonials losing by 22.

Ouch.

It will be interesting to see how long the suspensions will last, and could very well effect where the Terriers finish in the NEC standings.

Then there is the top two, where for weeks now, it's been a two horse race. Robert Morris at 9-1 leads the way, and Bryant at 8-2 are right on their heels, but RMU still holds that tiebreaker (two head-to-head wins). As mentioned, RMU swept their two games  this past weekend and the Bulldogs did the same beating CCSU and Mount.

Now things get interesting for the second place team, as they will play four of the final six on the road including two tough games this weekend, at Mount and at Wagner. This difficult scheduled, coupled with Wagner's easy schedule leads me to believe the Seahawks have a good chance at catching the Bulldogs for that second place spot.

I think Bryant will do just enough to hold on to that second place spot.

As for the first place Colonials, they may have locked up first place and home court in the NEC this past weekend. In their final six games, they play three at home, and three on the road, but the schedule isn't that difficult. Only the final game, at Wagner, will the Colonials not be favorites.

If RMU can go 3-3 in this stretch, and given how they're playing that shouldn't be too difficult, they should win the regular season. 12 wins seemed to be a magic number at the beginning of the year, and it appears that will be enough, but I expect the Colonials to win a few more then that.

If I had to take a guess, I think the NEC will end something like this:

In: 1. RMU, 2. Bryant, 3. Wagner, 4. SFNY, 5. Mount, 6. SFPA,7. CCSU, 8. FDU

Out: LIU, Sacred Heart

RMU blows by St Francis Brooklyn

Eight guys, and eight guys only. A tough road game against a league contender. Robert Morris hasn't swept the Brooklyn trip in over a decade.

So what did this group of eight do? They won the game by 22 points, 72-50.

Lucky Jones got the Colonials started, and Karvel Anderson finished off the win, as RMU moved to 9-1 in the NEC, 14-11 overall. The win puts RMU three up on every team in the conference, except Bryant, who the Colonials lead by one game, but have won both head-to-head meetings.
Jones scored 18 first half points to help
RMU move to 9-1 in the NEC.
(Pitt Sporting News)

Translation: They're in the drivers seat.

Jones scored 18 first half points on 8-9 shooting, coming out of the gate with the teams first 11 points. Lucky has struggled a bit with his shot, but found it at the right time. The junior needed that type of half, because St Francis held RMU's star, Anderson, to zero points in the first frame.

They could only hold him down so long though.

Late in the contest, Jones and Stephan Hawkins --more on Hawk in a bit-- both picked up their fourth foul. The Colonials were up 13, but with Anderson struggling, and still six minutes left, things were a bit icy.

Anderson didn't care. He hit a step back three with a defender in his face, another three, and then a Kobe-esque step back pull up, scoring eight points on back-to-back-to-back possessions. The Colonials were now up 21 and the game was in hand.

That's what league MVP's do. Even when they're quiet, they close teams out.

Anderson and Jones finished with 31 points. All 18 of Jones' points were in the first, all 13 of Anderson's were in the second.

While Jones and Anderson were spectacular, the Colonials most valuable player was Hawkins. The sophomore finished with 11 points, four rebounds, and stayed out of foul trouble for most of the game. He gave NEC First teammer Jalen Cannon fits all game, holding him to 4-12 shooting on the night. Cannon never got going, and a lot of that credit goes to Hawk.

He certainly had help. Andy Toole's game planned appeared to be, clog the paint at all costs, double Cannon, and make the Terriers beat you from distance. It worked to perfection.

Speaking of Toole, he's got to be running away with NEC. Eight players, undersized, and it doesn't matter. The team is 5-1 since the suspensions. Toole has his team prepared each and every game, no matter what the opponent brings to the table, and he cant even run a full practice because of the limitations of having just eight guys.

One thing is certain, the Colonials are on a roll, and many around the league are starting to believe, even with just eight guys.

A lot more to come on CTC, but for now the Colonials are 9-1, and in complete control of the NEC.

--Lee Kunkel
--@Kunkel5

Chris: Not a whole lot to add. the tone was set early by Lucky Jones who scored the games first eleven points. He may not have scored after I tweeted out what the single game points record was for an RMU player (translation: I jinxed him), but he was really, really good.

-It should be noted that St. Francis had a few key players missing from this one. Guard Brent Jones and center Wayne Martin, along with two other players, were suspended due to violation of university policy. Sound familiar? The Terriers didn't look mentally prepared to play without them.

-Loved the low post defense on Jalen Cannon. He was swarmed to by at least one extra help defender every time he touched the ball. Cannon, who is one of the best players in this conference, only went 4-12 for ten points.

-Not much more to add. The suspensions hurt St. Francis, but not to the tune of a 22 point blowout. Stephan Hawkins played very well. he is really starting to find his stroke, especially from the free throw line. One thing He has to work on is he's fading away on his jump shot too much.

Nice win for the Colonials. They'll be on the road at St. Francis (PA) next Thursday before coming home Saturday. That's all for now.
